Austin

Big city, big heart, big adventures

They say everything’s bigger in Texas. Of course, the state itself is huge – you could fit the UK into Texas almost three times – but the saying rings true for so much more as well. From steaks to hairstyles, road trips to skyscrapers, be prepared to be wowed by the sheer size of it all. Arriving in Austin, you’ll find huge personality, with so many sides to discover. The live music, the art, the outdoorsy adventures, the food and craft beer, the sport, the rise of the tech industry – it’s a city buzzing with expectation.

When in Texas, you absolutely have to get some barbecue. And Austin has some of the best joints in the state. Prepare to tuck into ribs, brisket and pie – oh my – and much more at Franklin’s Barbecue or Salt Lick BBQ. Texas’ proximity to the Mexican border means some great Tex-Mex eats - in true Lone Star style, Texas took Mexican food and put its own spin on it, creating some unique (and delicious) dishes along the way. The most famous? Queso. This melty, cheesey, chilli dip with tortilla chips is a must-try, so in Austin head to local spots like Magnolia Café, Taco Deli and Torchy’s Tacos and get scooping.

To work off all that delicious food – and take advantage of the fantastic Texan summer sunshine – there are plenty of outdoor adventures to be had in Austin and beyond. Head to Lady Bird Lake, where you can bike around the edges, or head out on the water on a paddleboard or kayak. Further afield, there are swimming holes all over the state to cool off in – and for something a bit different, travel to Monahans Sandhills State Park and try sandboarding.

With the hotly-contested title of Live Music Capital of the World, your visit to Austin has to include a gig. There’s a proud musical heritage here, and in the city that gave us Janis Joplin and Willie Nelson, you’ll find anything from hip hop to honky tonk any night of the week. The Red River District is packed with great spots, including Stubbs BBQ, where you can feast on proper Texan barbecue while you enjoy the bands.
