Discover St Vincent and the Grenadines

Kingstown, the capital

With just 17,000 inhabitants it’s still more of a sleepy town, and very pleasantly walkable. Known as the ‘city of arches’, there’s plenty of beautiful architecture to admire as you wander the streets. If you need to cool down, head to Basil’s Bar in the Cobblestone Hotel for a cocktail or two.

Beaches & turquoise sea

St. Vincent is home to several volcanic beaches, with dark, sometimes black, sand that’s especially striking against the pounding Atlantic surf on the island’s East Coast. The Grenadines, on the other hand, have soft, white-sand beaches, surrounded by aquamarine, turquoise, and deep-blue waters.

Botanic Gardens

Just half a mile from the centre of Kingstown you’ll find the Botanic Gardens – one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. They were founded in 1765 by General Robert Melville to grow spices and medicinal plants, and are a wonderfully peaceful (and scented) place to spend a few hours. For something more challenging, you can hike up La Soufriere volcano – still active, it offers lush forests, incredible birdwatching, and stunning views.

Pirates of the Caribbean

If there’s something a little familiar about St. Vincent, it’s because was used as the filming location for a certain swashbuckling blockbuster! To get your dose of yo-ho-ho, make your way to Wallilabou Bay, which still has some of the sets and props intact. If you’re more about the luxury than a pirate’s life, hop over to Young Island, where Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and fellow stars stayed during filming. If you ask nicely, the hotel staff might share a few stories.

Tobago Cays

The uninhabited Tobago Cays are perfect for exploring colourful reefs. Known as the “Jewel in the Crown” of the Southern Grenadines, Tobago Cays comprises five picture-perfect islands surrounded by a clear lagoon. Here, you’ll find sea turtle nesting sites and feeding areas, small systems of mangroves, and the most well-developed coral reef complexes in St. Vincent. Swim with the resident turtles, snorkel around the almost 2.5-mile-long Horseshoe Reef, or simply relax on a magnificent white-sand beach—each island has at least one.
