As you might expect from the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh has embraced progress at lightning speed. Seamlessly balancing authentic Arabian tradition with modern glitz and glam, it attracts more tourists year on year, with something for everyone to uncover amidst the dramatic desert dunes.  

Riyadh is in growth mode, with an expanded downtown business district, F1 circuit, theme park complex and soon, the country’s first ever nightclub. Saudi Arabia’s capital city is also the perfect base to explore cultural attractions including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Jeddah, the gateway to Mecca, Al Ahsa, and the stunning Rock Art in Hima. 

Drink in the culture with a Middle Eastern style brew. Saudi Arabian culture hinges on hospitality and nothing says it more than a cup of fresh Arabic Gahwa coffee.  

For an intro to Riyadh’s roots, visit the National Museum of Saudi Arabia and Al Masmak Palace. Or take a trip to Diriyah’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, At-Turaif for more on the story of Saudi Arabia’s past. If you fancy getting even more up close and cultural, then Riyadh’s King Khalid Grand Mosque and Al Rajhi Mosque give you a chance to experience the country’s spiritual side. While prayer times are deeply personal for Riyadh’s Muslims, these two mosques welcome visitors with open arms.  

Sampling history and spirituality might be one way to understand Riyadh’s culture. But the other is more cosmopolitan: shopping, and lots of it. Weave through Souq Al-Zal, Riyadh’s largest antique market, or Souq Taibah for a traditional find from a local seller. Or opt for an elevated experience at one of the city’s luxury shopping malls that double up as sights in their own right. The Kingdom Centre, Riyadh Gallery Mall or Riyadh Park Mall are popular options. You’ll also find the 300-metre tall Sky Bridge at the Kingdom Centre which offers views of Riyadh’s desert landscape, and beyond.  

For more awe-inspiring vistas, the Edge of the World is a must-see. The 1,100m cliff at the end of the Tuwaik Mountains provides panoramic views and those all-important holiday snaps. Or, for an outdoorsy adventure a little closer to the city, stretch your legs along the banks of Wadi Namar, a refreshing desert oasis. 

As the sun goes down, Riyadh comes alive. Sunset dune bashing in the Red Sands Desert is a go-to for thrill-seekers all year round. Boulevard City is the Middle East’s take on the Big Apple. Peppered with colourful lights, high-end shops and a melting pot of cuisines, stroll the Times Square-esque walkway. Be sure to catch a show at the Dancing Fountains, it’s the perfect al-fresco dining entertainment. And if you’re hungry for more, head to Boulevard World for a taste of the globe. It’s a great way to sample cultures from all over, without having to jump on a plane. 

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting between October and March, make the most of Riyadh Season. With a curated schedule of evening entertainment, this is the hottest event of the winter. Well, you know what we mean.
